Support Sustainability: Taiwan’s New Era of Reusable Cups

Taiwan will implement a ban on single-use plastic cups starting in September 2024, while permitting the use of alternative materials, such as paper cups. This initiative aims to eliminate approximately 790 million single-use plastic cups annually.

To facilitate this transition, the Ministry of Environment (MOENV) is launching a reusable cup rental program and considering subsidies for events that promote the use of reusable cups. Drink establishments are now required to provide cups made from plant fibers, offer reusable options, and encourage customers to bring their own cups. Currently, 1,763 convenience stores and fast food chains are participating in this initiative, providing approximately 198,000 reusable cups available for borrowing.
